Let’s be clear – grant management is complex. From natural disasters to housing crises, the pressure to get people the help they need is enormous. If you're a CIO, CTO, grant manager, or local government official, you know all about how crucial it is to respond quickly and effectively.

The US government recently announced $5.5 billion in new Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding to boost affordable housing and address homelessness in 1,200 U.S. communities. This initiative aims to lower housing costs, increase supply, expand rental assistance, and tackle racial bias in appraisals. All very awesome things.

Applying for these new grants is no joke. Imagine a stuntman trying to balance on a tight rope across the Grand Canyon. One wrong move and all efforts can be lost. To make your communities better, you need a rock-solid plan of how to plan for them.

A New Wave of US Grants

The grants announced by the US government will provide essential funding for activities to meet communities' urgent needs. The goal of the grants is to offer resources to build homes, support renters and homeowners, assist those experiencing homelessness, create jobs, and enhance public facilities, community resilience, and local economies. Again, all things that make your community the best place in the world to live.

Some specific funds that will be provided through the new program:

  • The HOME Investment Partnerships Program allocated $1.3 billion to 668 grantees for affordable housing, creating over 13,000 units and assisting more than 13,000 households.
  • The Housing Trust Fund provided $214 million to increase affordable housing, creating over 1,681 units for extremely low-income households.
  • The Community Development Block Grants distributed $3.3 billion to 1,254 grantees, benefiting over 62,000 families, 25,500 individuals, and millions through various services and improvements.
  • The HOPWA program directed $455 million to 130 grantees, assisting over 100,000 households affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Emergency Solutions Grants awarded $290 million to 357 grantees for homelessness services, aiding over 350,000 people annually.
  • The Recovery Housing Program granted $30 million to support transitional housing for individuals recovering from substance use disorder.

These funds are here to tackle a wide range of social and economic issues affecting our communities. Many organizations across the country will be applying, so you’ll need to streamline the application process to better your shot at receiving them.

Grant Management Challenges

Grant management often suffers from siloed information, leading to manual data entry and sharing, causing delays and errors. This inefficiency strains budgets and resources, and keeps the money from reaching those who actually need it. Poor management creates delays, resources getting misallocated, and worst of all, not giving the community help it needs.

The inability to effectively manage grants for emergency response can be really bad news:

  • Delayed Aid: Inefficient grant oversight delays funds, leaving disaster-impacted communities without critical aid and services when needed most.
  • Misallocation of Resources: Without real-time visibility into grant spending, resources may be misallocated to lower-priority areas, worsening inefficiency and suffering.
  • Compliance Risks and Penalties: Improper tracking/reporting of grant expenditures can lead to compliance violations, risking future funding and incurring penalties.
  • Eroded Public Trust: An inefficient emergency response undermines public trust in government's crisis management.

Whether you're managing urgent responses to natural disasters or addressing the challenges posed by housing crises or other challenges, organizations need comprehensive solutions that empower them to stay ahead of the curve.

Legacy systems and fragmented solutions get in the way of effective grant management and rapid response, leading to budget constraints and employee burnout. Agencies need a unified platform that connects people, information, and processes while automating manual tasks.
